Overview
Hard Disk Sentinel is a hard disk monitoring application which can help identifying possible hard disk problems, performance degradations or (even more) hard disk failures.
As hard disk sizes are constantly increasing, the data stored on them are more and more valuable for the user of the computer (and this is especially true for a company or office). Serious problems can occur upon a hard disk failure.
Hard Disk Sentinel can monitor hard disk status, including temperature and S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, built in most hard disks today) values for each hard disks. Also it measures the hard disk transfer speed in real time which can be used as a benchmark or to detect possible hard disk failures, performance degradations.
Hard Disk Sentinel can be used to prevent serious damage or data loss. It warns the user if there will be a problem occur and this gives opportunity to backup important and valuable data.
How does it work?
Hard Disk Sentinel runs in the background and constantly analyses hard disk status. If there is an error or unexpected behaviour detected, it warns the user about the current status.
Usually, hard disk status may slowly decline, from day to day. The S.M.A.R.T. monitoring technology can help to predict possible failures by monitoring the critical values of the drive (see the F.A.Q. section for more information).
Also it displays the current hard disk temperature(s) and logs previous temperatures which may be used to check the maximum temperature under high hard disk load. For the importance of the temperature, see the F.A.Q. section.

Automatic analyse of hard disks
Hard Disk Sentinel has option to start automatically when Windows boots. Once configured, you will not need to take any actions or launch it manually, your computer is now protected. If you want to view detailed information, it is just a click away.

Hard Disk Sentinel can communicate with IDE and Serial ATA hard disks to detect their status and temperature. It displays the current and maximum temperature for the hard disk. It can read all general and vendor-specific attributes and monitor their values. For advanced users, all raw data are displayed also including power-on hours or number of read/write errors. Hard Disk Sentinel also interprets the performance and fitness related S.M.A.R.T. values and displays the calculated Performance and Health values.
Information on demand
It displays current hard disk temperature on the system tray and warns you if there is a problem with the disk(s). If you want to view detailed informations, there are several options: you can toggle quick status window, full information window, temperature history. For more information about these, please visit the Screenshots section.
Hard Disk Details
Detects and displays every information about the hard disk, from the revision number and buffer size to all features it has. The maximum available and current transfer modes are also displayed. This can help to identify if the hard disk and the controller are working at the maximum available transfer speed.
Hard Disk Performance
Logs how much data were read from or written to the hard disk. Displays current transfer rates for both reading and writing and the current hard disk usage in percent (as you can inspect CPU usage). Low disk usage means that hard disk is "idle" as it does not need to work. Higher disk usage means that the hard disk is executing a read or write operation. Usually large file copy or defragment operation cause high disk usage. Hard Disk Sentinel measures transfer rate and estimates the maximum available (real) transfer rate for a particular hard disk.
Hard Disk Partitions
Displays partitions for each physical hard disks and type and usage informations about them so if you cannot run out of space.
Improvements

Windows NT based operating system (Windows 2000, XP, 2003 or Longhorn/Vista)
System administrator acount
At least 1 megabyte hard disk space
Hard disk with ATA communication interface.
SCSI or external disks (USB or IEEE 1394) are NOT supported.
Note: RAID arrays usually do not provide S.M.A.R.T. informations. However, standalone hard disks connected to standard RAID controllers (for example motherboard integrated RAID controllers) usually provide this information. If you have good or bad experiences or compatibility problems, please let us know.
