我找到一家虛擬主機商,在其控制中心有一段有關e-mail的描述,能不能告訴我他的意思...

Shell-based Mail

[Warning: This is an advanced option. We are happy to offer you the flexibility of using shell based mail, but you must be prepared to do the required work on your end to fully understand the option. We cannot provide support past the initial conversion of your account to shell-based mail. Those who are new to unix, webhosting, etc. should stick with the default option.]

A more powerful (and more complicated at times) option is to have all your mail sent directly to your home directory. With this option, you use .qmail files (similiar to .forward files) to further filter, process, forward, etc. your mail. If you request this option, we will set your mail server to simply deliver all mail ([email protected]) to your /home/username/Mailbox file. You will need to create the necessary .qmail files to do any further processing that your needs may require. This is a very powerful option, however a good understanding of both Unix and (often times) shell scripting is required. We cannot provide further support of this option other than the initial delivery of mail to your home directory.

The primary drawback to this method is that you will not have access to multiple POP3 mailboxes. Instead, you will use your username@server_name.phpwebhosting.com POP3 account to pop any mail which is in your /home/username/Mailbox file. You still have total control over the full name space for your domain. You can forward different names to other POP3 accounts. But you will only have one POP3 at phpwebhosting.com to download mail that remains on our server.

The advantage is that you can use Pine to read your mail on the server (the default setup places all mail in a special directory which prevents the use of Pine). You also have full access to your "raw" .qmail files to do automatic processing of your mail or complex setup of your mailing lists. With the shell-based option you can also use perl scripts, php, etc to automate the creation of new .qmail files. Without switching to shell-based mail it is not possible to use a script to create new .qmail files because all your .qmail files are stored in a system directory instead of in your home directory.

If you would like the option enabled, enter a request asking that we enable it.
