This can happen if 1) Somehow previous data bytes have been lost and data packet sequence has been disturbed. 2) Or, the device is actually sending unknown sequence of data bytes. (What pointing device does your ThinkPad have?) 3) Or, the device is broken and sending wrong data bytes.
