Translator's Note:
A central theme of this song is the Iroha, a poem written in classical Japanese which uses every base syllable of the Japanese language exactly once and which was once used as an ordering system for its symbols, similar to the English "ABCs." The first two lines of the poem are featured in the lyrics of the song (I Ro Ha Ni Ho He To, Chi Ri Nu Ru Wo), and other references to the text are made throughout.

The original poem goes as follows:
いろはにほへと　ちりぬるを
Though the colors shine so bright, they too shall surely fade!
わかよたれそ　つねならむ
Who in this wide world of ours can say they are everlasting?
うゐのおくやま　けふこえて
Crossing today the inner mountains of this illusory realm,
